How to use penicillin medicine to treat cattle and sheep disease?
Penicillin has a good effect on most diseases caused by gram-positive bacteria, such as respiratory infections, anthrax, sepsis, etc. It has a strong antibacterial effect on various spirochetes and actinomycetes; oxacillin, o-cloxacillin , Dicloxacillin, and benzathine penicillin have reliable effects on respiratory infections, mastitis, trauma infections and sepsis caused by penicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
Choose the appropriate route of administration
Most penicillin veterinary drugs are unstable to acid and are easily destroyed by gastric acid and digestive enzymes when taken orally, so the effect of oral administration is poor or ineffective. The most suitable route of administration of penicillin veterinary drugs is intramuscular injection. After intramuscular injection, the absorption is fast and complete, and the curative effect is definite.
Points which need pay attention to in clinical application
1. Allergic reactions. Penicillin veterinary medicine generally have no adverse reactions when used in animal bodies, but occasionally allergic reactions to individual livestock may occur. In severe cases, anaphylactic shock may occur. Horses, mules, pigs, dogs, etc. are more common in allergic livestock. Shortly after injection, symptoms such as sweating, excitement, muscle tremor, rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, unstable standing, and convulsions appear. Therefore, attention should be paid to observation during the medication. If allergic reactions occur, the medication should be stopped immediately, and at the same time, epinephrine or dexame thasone should be used for rescue.
2. Penicillin potassium salt Penstrep should not be injected intravenously but intramuscularly. When using penicillin potassium salt, you should also pay attention to the changes in animal blood potassium. Generally, it is forbidden to use it in large quantities, especially for animals suffering from hyperkalemia.
3. Penicillin veterinary drugs should not be injected on an empty stomach to avoid fainting caused by low blood sugar in the affected animals.
4. Do not increase the dose at will. The use of penicillin veterinary drugs in large or very large doses can interfere with the coagulation mechanism and cause hemorrhage or central nervous system poisoning, causing animal convulsions, incontinence, and even paralysis. It can also quickly induce drug-resistant bacteria to produce β-lactamase that decomposes penicillin. Therefore, in the veterinary clinic, the correct method of use and dosage should be strictly controlled.
5. Penicillin penstrep veterinary medicines should be used immediately after dissolution. Because the aqueous solution of penicillin drugs is unstable, the longer the time it takes to dissolve at room temperature, the lower its potency, the more decomposition products, and the increasing number of sensitizers. Therefore, it should be dissolved and used immediately to ensure efficacy and reduce toxic side effects.
6. Pay attention to the compatibility taboo. Sulfonamide sodium salt mixed with penicillin will make penicillin ineffective; penicillin combined with gentamycin will make gentamycin ineffective; penicillin cannot be mixed with tetracycline, sodium bicarbonate, vitamin c, atropine, etc., otherwise it will fail.
